Get the Shot: No Matter What

Dan Bracken

I once wanted to be a Photographer for National Geographic.

Until I heard a story about someone they sent to the Amazon Rainforest to take pictures of an elusive monkey. To get the shot, he waded in swamp water with alligators for 48 hours; his bobbing head covered in bugs an inch-thick.

At least that’s how I remember the article. I was gonna link it, but couldn’t find it anywhere.

Still, the best pictures require a little adventure.

I had to stand on top of a Range Rover.

I had to withstand -14 degree winds for 30 minutes.

I had to let 100 sweat bees lick my arm without flinching.

I had to hand the camera to an intern, and cover myself with goo.

I had to break into a hospital. Yeah. A story for another day.

I had to commit treason. Again, a story for another day.

I had to hang on monkey bars for 3 minutes with a windblower in my face AND practice After Effects for 3 years.

I had to do the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do in my life. I had to wake up before sunrise. WAY before sunrise.

I had to give up every Wednesday evening for 7 years of small group, every Friday morning for 3 years of Mcdonald’s breakfast, take them on mission trips, go to their baseball games, birthday parties and graduations. These are my disciples.

All in all, be willing to do what it takes. What are you willing to do to get the shot?
